Bridging the Gaps of Arkansas, a nonprofit based in Texarkana, recently held its Next‑Gen Youth Leadership Conference, drawing middle and high school students from across southwest Arkansas to engage in a full day of workshops, community building, and leadership training. The event aimed to empower youth with tools to support mental health awareness, substance abuse prevention, and civic engagement.

Students from four counties, including Miller and Bowie, gathered for a series of interactive sessions that included leadership development, mental well-being education, and practical strategies for making healthy choices. Teen mentors and local leaders delivered motivational talks, while smaller breakout sessions allowed students to practice advocacy, teamwork, and resilience skills. Organizers said the program was designed not only to educate but also to inspire students to lead positive change within their schools and neighborhoods.

The conference was hosted in partnership with the Empowering TXK Coalition, a collaborative initiative that includes Bridging the Gaps, local churches, schools, and health agencies. Support also came from the Arkansas Division of Behavioral Health Services, which promotes awareness of underage drinking and mental health issues. Event listings described the conference as a hub for youth-centered learning, focused on both personal development and broader community impact.

Students responded positively to the event’s message and format. One seventh-grader from Miller County said, “I loved hearing from the teens, I now feel supported to speak up about mental health in my school.” Organizers reported high engagement levels throughout the day, with students participating actively in activities like scenario planning, mental health discussions, and the creation of prevention campaigns.

The conference reflects Bridging the Gaps of Arkansas’s broader mission to foster youth leadership and community resilience. Beyond the event, the organization operates a variety of programs including wellness fairs, housing support, and teen summer institutes. Future plans include mentorship opportunities, service projects, and a youth ambassador program aimed at maintaining year-round engagement.

With nearly 200 students expected to participate, the Next‑Gen Youth Conference served as a significant step in nurturing leadership and well-being among Arkansas teens. Backed by strong community partnerships and enthusiastic youth participation, the initiative represents meaningful progress toward equipping the next generation with the confidence and tools to make lasting, positive contributions in their communities.
